1910 baseball Class-B TRI-STATE LEAGUE from 1903-1914. Reach was naturally in the business of selling baseballs and this is a stock A.L. ball supplied by them to the Tri-State League – fortunately someone and their descendants found reason enough to protect it for over a century. The Tri-State League included teams like The Lancaster Red Roses, The Wiliamsport Millionaires, The Harrisburg Senators, Allentown, Atlantic City etc. The ball is beautiful – a few panels and flaps of the original box have been retained. I have included many pictures –the stampings would have to be called 99.5%. To be more precise about the stampings, despite the pictures showing a loss OR weakness to part of a letter here or there, this is NOT the case. The 1.25 price and attached text includes the word “manufactured” which is missing the top area of 3 or 4 letters – this is actually the only real absence of ink I see on any of the stampings – down to the period after Aug. and all stampings are darker and bolder than they show in the photos. The REACH trademark shows a little dirt or ? – very light and will probably remove if so desired. Finally, the pictures show a bit of pebbling to the leather in random spots – I’ve seen this before and, other than being 107 years old, I have no theories beyond natural aging. This 116 year old white, unused REACH OFFICIAL AMERICAN LEAGUE ball is one of the cornerstones or holy grails of baseball equipment memorabilia – this extraordinary stamped 1910 ball is an interesting, possibly unique surviving variation. The baseball has Pat’d Aug. 31-09 and all other normal stampings usually found on this revered ball – all stampings are superb!! However, the ball is absent the Ban Johnson stamp and in it’s place is the oversized, visually commanding signature of C.F.Carpenter and the even bolder, heavier stamping “1910”. Carpenter was President of the Tri-State League - I have seen quite a few of these rare blue and red stitched early 20th Century Official American League baseballs over the years but never a variant destined for the minors, in this case the northeastern Tri-State League.
