Antique Original Japanese Woodblock Print by Hiroshige II -Snow at Temple Kanda Myojin- c.1862 Framed
Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print created in 1862 by the renowned Edo-period artist Utagawa Hiroshige II (1829-1869).
This print is titled: "Temple Kanda Myojin in Snow", from the series " 36 Famous Places in the Eastern Capital".
A young samurai is coming to the Myojin Temple in Kanda with his servant carrying an umbrella. The Shinto priests and temple workers are cleaning the snow. A funny-looking foo-dog statue is guarding the temple grounds.
Hiroshige II continued the artistic legacy of the renowned ukiyo-e master Ando Hiroshige by producing numerous series of landscape woodblock prints that followed established themes and visual conventions.
Hiroshige II, born Chinpei Suzuki in 1829, was an important figure within the ukiyo-e tradition. As was customary, his teacher, Ando Hiroshige, granted him the artist name Shigenobu. After the death of Hiroshige I's son in 1845, he was adopted into the family. After the death of Hiroshige I, Shigenobu assumed his master's go (artist name) and signed works as Hiroshige Ichirysai. In modern art history, he is generally identified as Hiroshige Utagawa II.
Hiroshige II died on October 21, 1869, in Yokohama, bringing an end to a career shaped by both artistic continuity and personal hardship.
The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in 1852 during Hiroshige II's lifetime.
Please note: this is an original antique woodblock print certified by the Japanese gallery T.Sakai in Asakusa, Tokyo. Tatsuma Sakai is one of the world's biggest collectors of ukiyo-e prints.

The condition is very good. Good detail and color; some toning and soiling of the paper; no holes or repairs. Framed in a good-quality wooden frame imitating bamboo. It is in excellent used condition.
