An unusual vintage sporting medal from Elveden Forest Holiday Village in Suffolk, now one of the best-known Center Parcs UK locations.
The substantial medal features a large raised badminton shuttlecock surrounded by a wreath, identifying the sporting activity for which it was produced.
Above the badminton design is a distinctive lattice or geodesic dome motif.
This appears to represent the domed leisure architecture strongly associated with the early Center Parcs holiday-village concept and its Subtropical Swimming Paradise.
The outer inscription reads:
ELVEDEN FOREST
HOLIDAY VILLAGE
with a small red-coloured emblem above the dome and additional red detail to the shuttlecock.
Elveden Forest opened in 1989, and the design and terminology of this medal appear consistent with an earlier generation of Elveden Forest sporting memorabilia.
It was most probably produced as an award for an organised badminton activity or competition held at the holiday village.
The exact date and circumstances of issue have not been established, so I am deliberately not describing it as an opening-year medal or assigning it to a particular tournament.
The medal is unusually substantial for this type of holiday-village sporting award, weighing approximately 30.65 g.
Diameter: approximately 44.68 mm
Maximum thickness: approximately 3.96 mm
Weight: approximately 30.65 g
The suspension loop is integral to the medal.
The reverse is completely plain with no engraving, maker's mark or recipient's details.
An interesting piece of early Elveden Forest / Center Parcs memorabilia, particularly suitable for collectors of Center Parcs items, British holiday and leisure memorabilia or badminton-related sporting collectables.
The photographs show the actual item being offered and its condition.
