Offered is an exceptionally intriguing original Russian hand-painted work depicting Rostov / Rostov Veliky, executed in vivid opaque pigments with extensive gold-painted details and preserved under glass in its existing frame.
The composition depicts the celebrated historic architecture of Rostov, including an imaginative arrangement of onion-domed churches, towers, fortified walls and traditional Russian architectural forms. Brilliant cobalt blue, turquoise, orange, green, red, black, white and metallic gold create an exceptionally distinctive Russian folk-influenced architectural composition.
SIGNATURE & INSCRIPTIONS
The work bears several important identifying elements.
The lower portion of the image contains РОСТОВ — “ROSTOV” — painted directly into the composition in gold pigment.
Beneath the image is a handwritten Cyrillic inscription identifying the Rostov subject and apparently referencing tempera.
Most notably, the lower margin carries a flowing handwritten signature that appears to read Верещагин / Vereshchagin.
A separate gold-colored monogram is painted within the lower-right corner of the composition.
These inscriptions and marks are presented exactly as found. No definitive attribution to a particular member of the Vereshchagin artistic family is being made by the seller.
VASILY VERESHCHAGIN / ROSTOV RESEARCH INTEREST
The combination of the Vereshchagin surname, Rostov subject and monogram makes the work particularly interesting for further scholarly investigation.
Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin (1842–1904), one of the internationally recognized Russian artists of the 19th century, is historically documented as having traveled to and worked in Rostov Veliky, where he studied historic Russian architecture and produced Rostov-related material.
Accepted works by Vereshchagin are also documented with abbreviated and monogrammed signatures.
Because this work has not undergone formal museum or scientific authentication, it is being offered as an unidentified signed Russian work requiring additional attribution research rather than as an authenticated work by Vasily Vereshchagin.
MEDIUM & CONSTRUCTION
Physical inspection shows that this is an actual hand-painted work rather than a conventional printed reproduction.
The colors are opaque and visibly applied to the support, with extensive painted gold ornamentation throughout the architecture and inscriptions. The appearance is consistent with tempera/gouache-type painting, and the handwritten Russian notation beneath the composition also appears to reference tempera.
The work is executed on a substantial cream-colored paper/card-type support.
During examination of the existing framing, the reverse of the actual artwork was exposed and photographed. The reverse shows scattered historical pigment transfer/working marks but no obvious modern printed image.
An existing mat/window is adhered to the artwork/support and has intentionally been left undisturbed to preserve the work.
Interestingly, examination revealed that portions of the original composition—including part of the painted РОСТОВ inscription—extend beneath the existing mat.
PROVENANCE
The work has a documented American ownership history extending to at least Christmas 1997.
The former frame backing carries a handwritten presentation inscription recording that the piece was given to an American family at Christmas 1997 and stating:
“from Russia with love!!”
Importantly, 1997 represents the documented presentation/provenance date and is not being represented as the date the painting was created.
Russian-language printed material was also discovered within the historical framing assembly.
COLLECTOR INTEREST
An unusually compelling research piece for collectors of:
Russian Art • Imperial & Soviet-Era Art • Rostov Veliky • Russian Architectural Art • Tempera Painting • Russian Folk Art • Vereshchagin Research • Signed Works on Paper • Russian Cultural History
The combination of an original painted Rostov composition, Cyrillic inscriptions, apparent Верещагин signature, separate gold monogram, Russian-associated provenance and historical framing makes this a particularly interesting candidate for continued specialist research.
The artwork is offered exactly as discovered and photographed. Attribution, precise age and exact medium remain subjects for further scholarly examination.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and document the artwork, inscriptions, monogram, reverse and framing construction.
A fascinating signed Russian work with substantial potential for further research and attribution.
