sixth plate early daguerreotype of intense looking man in an artist marked mat.  Image has some slight buffing/swiping marks.  The solarization actually kind of adds to the photograph.  The case is very nice with an unusual brown configuration unlike most of the cases I see.  I believe this Kelsey is the correct artist as this photograph is most likely from 1849ish so he was the only photographer by that name making dags at the time.

Kelsey, Calvin C.

Daguerreian and stock dealer, Chicago, Ill., 1849-1857. In 1849-1850 he was listed as a daguerreian at 136 Lake Street. He advertised he had received a premium for the best daguerreotypes at the Chicago Mechanics Institute Fair (1849?). He was also listed as a stock dealer; he lived at 151 Dearborn Street. In 1851 he advertised the "Sky Light Daguerreian Gallery" at 96 lake Street, as well as a stock depot. He maintained this address through 1857 (from 1852-1854 he was listed at 76 Lake, but this may be a typo). In 1856-1857 he was listed as a lightning rod maker. In 1858 he was again listed as a dealer in daguerreian materials. He exhibited at the 1853 Crystal Palace. In 1887, he committed suicide by jumping from 130 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y.
