Vintage Finchley Establishment men's fur felt hat in pearl grey. The crown is left open and uncreased — ready for you to shape to your own taste. The flat brim has a raw, unbound edge, finished with a wide black grosgrain band and a classic four-layer bow.

The sweatband is gold-stamped "The Finchley Establishment, Fifth Avenue," and embossed for the retailer Berger's, San Francisco. The cream satin liner carries the Finchley coat of arms with "Fifth Avenue New York," finished with the maker's signature red radial stitching.

This hat was passed down to us from a family relative, Anton Zamloch, an American magician — a piece of personal history with a story behind it.

Condition: excellent — no moth holes, cracks, or fading. There is a tiny faint speck on the front of the crown, and the liner shows minor age foxing. Includes a vintage Saks Fifth Avenue oval hat box with cord handle; the box shows age wear with scuffed and chipped trim.

This piece comes directly from the family estate of the famous 19th and early-20th-century stage illusionist Anton Zamloch (“Zamloch the Great”) (1848–1932). Billed as one of the premier American magicians of the Gilded Age, Zamloch toured opera houses, mining towns, and theaters across North America, Hawaii, and Mexico before settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. Personal wardrobe items from the Zamloch estate—especially fine custom headwear tailored by premier San Francisco and European haberdashers—are exceptionally rare historic pieces of stage and magic Americana.
