Introduced in 1968 by Japan's Kowa Corporation, the Kowa SIX was engineered as an accessible, Japanese-made alternative to the Hasselblad 500 series. Shooting a classic 6x6cm square format on 120 or 220 film, it features an L-shaped SLR layout with an eye-level or waist-level finder system. Unlike modular European 6x6 SLRs that used interchangeable film backs, the original Kowa SIX utilizes a fixed film back with a straight-through film path, significantly simplifying the mechanical loading procedure while reducing light-leak risks.
The included Kowa 85mm f/2.8 standard prime lens houses a built-in, mechanically controlled Seiko leaf shutter capable of full electronic flash synchronization at all speeds up to 1/500 second. Operating as a fully mechanical system independent of battery power, the camera incorporates an unusual winding crank located on the lower left of the body, which simultaneously advances the film, cocks the lens shutter, and resets the mirror. Renowned for its sharp optical performance, rich contrast, and distinct mechanical design, the Kowa SIX remains a cult favorite among vintage medium format SLR enthusiasts.
