I'm selling this beautiful vintage art pottery sleeve/cylinder vase made by the famous Watcombe Pottery in Torquay, Devon. 

It has a striking, vibrant hand-painted scene of a kingfisher flying over a white water lily against a rich cobalt blue ground, with a glazed black rim.

The backstamp is slightly blurred, but reads "Watcombe Torquay, England" on the red terracotta base with the style/shape number 221. The mark on the base is original from the firing.

The vase is in really excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. 

The hand-painted glaze colours are bright, crisp, and beautiful with normal, clean vintage crazing.

Watcombe Pottery was originally founded in 1869 after fine red terracotta clay was discovered in Devon, England. 

Over the decades, it grew to become one of the most famous names in regional "Torquay Ware". 

While early factory production focused on plain unglazed terracotta, the pottery pivoted heavily into colorful glazed souvenirs and art pieces after merging with the nearby Aller Vale pottery in 1901. 

Hand-painted local wildlife scenes—specifically the Kingfisher—became massive commercial successes through the mid-20th century. 

Watcombe finally closed its factory doors forever in 1962, making these surviving mid-century pieces highly sought-after by Devon slipware and art pottery collectors.

This is a gorgeous, clean original piece for any collector of Devon Torquay ware or bird lovers.
