🎬 Osawa MC 28mm F2.8 Cine Mod – Anamorphic-Style Oval Bokeh | M4/3

This vintage Osawa MC 28mm F2.8 is a professionally modified manual-focus prime prepared for cinematography, filmmaking and professional video production. The lens combines the organic optical character of vintage Japanese glass with practical cine modifications, including a de-clicked aperture, two follow-focus gears, neutral oval-bokeh modification and Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) mount adaptation.

The lens features a specially modified neutral oval bokeh, designed to reproduce part of the visual character associated with classic anamorphic cinematography. Out-of-focus highlights acquire an oval appearance, creating a distinctive cinematic aesthetic. This is still a spherical lens, so the recorded image is not horizontally squeezed and does not require de-squeezing in post-production. For an anamorphic-inspired widescreen presentation, simply crop the finished footage or add approximately 2.35:1 aspect-ratio black bars during editing.

The aperture has been professionally de-clicked, allowing smooth and stepless iris adjustments during video recording. Two cine-style follow-focus gears are installed for precise control of both the focus and aperture rings, making the lens much easier to integrate with a follow-focus system or cinema camera rig.

Before sale, the lens has been fully cleaned, mechanically adjusted and re-lubricated. It has also been professionally adapted and adjusted for Micro Four Thirds / M4/3 mount use.

The glass is in good vintage condition, but there is very minor age-related wear on the optical surfaces, typical for vintage lenses of this period. This minor optical wear does not affect the final image under normal shooting conditions. The lens body also shows normal cosmetic signs of previous use consistent with its age.

Please examine all listing photographs carefully. The photographs show the actual lens being offered and form an important part of the condition description.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTICE: Due to the clearly disclosed wear on the optical glass and the vintage nature of this lens, the item is offered and sold AS-IS. Returns or refunds will not be accepted on the basis of the described optical wear, age-related cosmetic condition, or other condition details that are clearly disclosed in this listing and visible in the photographs. By purchasing the lens, the buyer acknowledges and accepts the disclosed condition. Any mandatory buyer protections or marketplace policies that cannot legally be excluded remain applicable.

The original optical design provides a 35mm / full-frame image circle. The M4/3 adaptation does not change the native image circle of the lens. When used on a Micro Four Thirds camera, however, the smaller sensor records the central portion of the full-frame image circle. The 28mm focal length therefore gives an angle of view approximately comparable to a 56mm lens on a full-frame camera because of the approximately 2x crop factor.

A Little History

Osawa lenses come from the classic Japanese manual-focus photography era, with Osawa-branded photographic equipment appearing primarily during the 1970s and early 1980s. The brand was associated with J. Osawa & Co., a major Japanese photographic distributor with historical connections to Mamiya. This Cine Mod is based on the original Osawa MC 28mm F2.8 manual-focus wide-angle prime, preserving its vintage multi-coated optical character while adding modifications that make it significantly more practical for modern cinematography.

🎬 Why Choose This Lens?

The Osawa MC 28mm F2.8 Cine Mod is designed for filmmakers who want genuine vintage optical character combined with practical cinema-oriented controls. Its neutral oval-bokeh modification produces anamorphic-inspired out-of-focus highlights while retaining a normal spherical image that requires no de-squeezing. The de-clicked aperture enables smooth iris adjustments during recording, while dedicated gears on both the focus and aperture controls make the lens convenient for follow-focus operation. On Micro Four Thirds, the 28mm focal length provides an approximately 56mm full-frame-equivalent field of view, making it a useful character-rich normal lens for narrative filmmaking, music videos, interviews, experimental cinematography and stylized commercial productions.
