under the name City of York, but the most notable passenger-cargo
liner
was a 1953 vessel built by
Vickers-Armstrongs in England.
Operating primarily between London
and South Africa, it accommodated 107 first-class passengers.
The ship had a rich and complex
history:
Original Service (1953–1971):
Built for Ellerman Lines, it was a
16,533-gross-ton vessel that carried a combination of refrigerated cargo
and passengers on the London to
South Africa run.
Conversion to Cruise Ferry
(1971–1996):
Sold to Karageorgis Lines, she was
extensively rebuilt into a luxury passenger car ferry and cruise ship.
Renamed the MS Mediterranean
Sky, she carried up to 850 passengers on Mediterranean routes.
Final Fate:
Laid up in Patras, Greece, due to
the owner's financial struggles, the abandoned ship was moved to Eleusis Bay.
She took on water, was beached in
late 2002, and partially sank in 2003, where the rusted wreckage remains today.
