About William Beveridge

William Beveridge (1637–1708) was a prominent English churchman, scholar and theologian who became Bishop of St Asaph.

Known particularly for his sermons and devotional and theological writings, Beveridge was an important figure in the seventeenth-century Church of England. His writings continued to be collected and republished long after his death.

This volume is especially interesting as it appeared very shortly after his death and states that the sermons were “Printed from his Original Manuscripts.”

Interesting Open-Air Mission provenance

This particular copy has an especially interesting later association with the history of Christian preaching.

Pasted to the front board is an original label headed:

OPEN-AIR MISSION
Rules of the Preachers' Library

The label records that the library was maintained for members of the Open-Air Mission, with books available for borrowing by members. It gives the Mission's offices as 11 Adam Street, Strand, London, W.C.

The volume therefore appears to have formed part of the Open-Air Mission's Preachers' Library, making this an interesting association copy for collectors interested in the history of British evangelism and open-air preaching.

An old handwritten inscription is also present on the front endpaper.

Binding

Bound in an attractive early full-leather binding, with blind-tooled panel decoration to the boards and raised bands to the spine.

The binding has considerable age and character, although it is now in a very fragile state.

Condition

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

The binding is very fragile.

Both hinges are severely weakened and the boards are essentially holding by threads. The book therefore requires very careful handling. There is substantial wear and loss to the leather of the spine, particularly at the head and foot, together with rubbing, scuffing and wear to the boards, corners and edges.

The text block itself remains firm.

Internally there is expected age-toning, occasional spotting, staining and marks consistent with a book more than 300 years old. There are old inscriptions/annotations and the Open-Air Mission library label described above.

Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Despite the distressed binding, this remains an appealing 1710 theological volume, retaining its period leather binding and possessing particularly interesting Open-Air Mission preaching provenance.
