Up for sale is an issue of Creepy, the legendary black-and-white horror magazine published by Warren Publishing. First appearing in 1964, Creepy became one of the defining American horror publications of the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, ultimately running for 145 issues through 1983.
Featuring its ghoulish host Uncle Creepy, the magazine presented anthology-style tales of vampires, werewolves, ghosts, monsters, witches, demons, revenge, science fiction, psychological terror and the supernatural.
Creepy arrived during a period when traditional American comic books operated under the restrictive Comics Code Authority. Warren published Creepy in a larger black-and-white magazine format rather than as a conventional color comic book, allowing the publication greater freedom to explore darker and more sophisticated horror material.
The concept deliberately recalled the classic horror anthologies of the pre-Code era while introducing that style of storytelling to a new generation.
Its success helped establish Warren as one of the most important publishers of horror magazines, eventually leading to companion titles including Eerie and Vampirella.
One of the greatest attractions of Creepy was the extraordinary roster of creators who contributed to the magazine during its long run.
