Mk3 coaches were built between 1975 and 1988. They were similar to the later air-conditioned (air-con) Mk2 coaches, except they were 75 feet long compared to the previous standard length of 64½ feet. A variant of the Mk3 became the rolling stock for the High Speed Train (HST), which were built between 1975 and 1982. These were designed to run at 125mph and reduce journey times on Inter-City routes. They have operated on principle services out of Paddington, Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross, as well as cross-country services.

London North Eastern Railway, which is owned by the DfT OCR Holdings for the Department of Transport, took over the InterCity East Coast franchise in June 2018 from the privately owned Virgin East Coast (VTEC). It was later announced that the company holds the franchise until 2025, running long distance services from London Kings Cross to Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
