This bid is for a Pair of Genuine United States Army Distinctive Unit Insignia or Unit Crest for the U.S. Army 3rd Cavalry Regiment, known as “The Regiment of Mounted Riflemen”. As can be seen from the pictures, one of these DUI was made by ‘IRA GREEN INC’ of Rhode Island, marked under ‘623’ and the other made by ‘MEYER’ of New York. Both were purchased for my collection from an antique store in the USA almost 22 years ago and both are complete with their original clutch fittings. They were worn centred on the epaulettes of the Army Green Service and the blue Army Service uniforms for enlisted soldiers only, with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Each measures 1⅜ inches wide x 1⅛ inches high and both are in a perfect condition. The DUI features an entwined cavalry horn sat within the motto “BRAVE RIFLES” on a green background centrally over the number ‘3’. The third Cavalry Regiment was first raised in 1861 but less than a year after its original organisation in 1846, the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen took part in close-quarters combat at the Battle of Cerro Gordo in the Mexican-American War on April 17th and 18th 1847 and then on April 20th were instrumental in helping General Winfield Scott rout the Mexican forces. When Scott reviewed the Regiment following the fighting, he honoured them by removing his hat, bowing, and then announcing, “Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptised in fire and blood and have come out steel!” memorialised as the unit motto as on the DUI. The regiment served proudly in WW1 and WW2, then the Cold War and as of today serve as a Striker Brigade Combat Team, maintaining its historic traditions.
