Nice small Cuff Sized Regiment of Mounted Rifles / Rifleman uniform button. This is the Scovills backmark variety. The loop is missing on the back and there is a dent/push on the front side. This came from the collection of an elderly man (now deceased) from Tucson who used to metal detect in southern Arizona. This was in a bag marked "Fort Buchanan." Fort Buchanan was established forty miles south of Tucson in 1857 and was used until 1861 when it was abandoned at the beginning of the Civil War. It was garrisoned by several companies of Dragoons and the famous Confederate General Richard S. Ewell was commanding officer at Fort Buchanan before the Civil War.
