An attractive original 1883 edition of William Landels' Baptist Worthies, presenting biographical sketches of some of the most important figures in Baptist and Nonconformist history.

Landels wrote the work to introduce readers to men who had distinguished themselves in the history of the Baptist denomination and in the defence and propagation of its principles.
The volume is particularly attractive for its decorative Victorian publisher's binding, with elaborate black-stamped ornamentation to the front board, the title prominently blocked in gilt, further gilt lettering, and gilt titling to the spine.
The text is illustrated, including a couple of portraits and another engraved illustration. Among those shown is a portrait of John Bunyan.

An acceptable antiquarian copy in its original highly decorative Victorian cloth binding.
The binding remains striking, with the gilt and black decoration to the front board particularly well preserved. There is rubbing and wear around the edges and corners, with more noticeable wear and some fraying/loss to the cloth at the head and foot of the spine. A couple of splits to cloth on rear hinge - 1cm & 0.7cm (shown in photographs). Further minor surface marks and general shelf wear are present, commensurate with age.
The pages show general age-toning and occasional spotting/foxing and marks. Foxing heavy to endpapers. The illustrations remain attractive and the text is clearly legible.
