Mata Ortiz Pot by Efrain Lucero Andrew
This is an unusual piece of Mata Ortiz pottery; the artist decorated the surface with matte & polished freeform designs but then added a unique white stippled line to accent the boundaries between those areas in the design, after firing. This was handbuilt of local clay & polished to a sheen. Then the artist handpainted the negative areas of the design (the backgrounds) with fresh clay slip. These areas became the matte black backgrounds after the piece was pit fired & smoked overall to add the dark coloration to the surface. After it came out of the fire, they handpainted the white dotted borders between the black tones with white paint. This is signed on the base: Efrain Lucero Andrew. It measures approx 4.5” H x 4.75” W x 4.75” D. It is a rather interesting twist on blackware from the prolific pottery movement that is Mata Ortiz, where the potters always seem to be trying to find new ways to be creative within the genre!
Excellent condition.
Note: The rounded base on this pot needs a display ring to be shown safely (to avoid rolling off the table)! Let me know if you would like a free display ring, that is a little crude...you will probably want to replace it with a nicer one later!
