Mata Ortiz Pot with Horses by Antonio Ledezma
This charming pot is decorated with three pairs of female horses with their children on top & another set on the base. The mares wear bridles & the colts & foals are unfettered. They were carved out in a negative reversal design, where the area around the animals was scratched away, exposing the beige colored claybody. The actual surface was polished & smoked in the firing to acheive the shiny black areas that became the coats of the horses. This was all built by hand using coils of buff colored clay. The suface was smoothed & polished before being fired & smoked to get the rich black color. The artist then etched or drew the horses by removing the background & adding faces & details like socks, mane & tails. The mares have bridles which shows they are domesticated. This is signed Antonio Ledezma on the base. It measures approx 5.75" H x 8.75" W x 8.75" D. There is a small discolored spot just inside the rim as shown. This is a wonderful gift for a horse lover!
