Original WWII Imperial Japanese Army Type 99 canvas rucksack, commonly known in Japan as the “Tako-Ashi” or “Octopus-Leg” backpack because of its numerous external securing straps.

The inspection markings remain clearly visible beneath the flap. They indicate manufacture in Showa 15 (1940) and inspection by the Osaka Army Depot. An additional “大鞄納” ink stamp is also clearly present.

Handwritten unit information, possibly indicating the 7th Company, followed by the original soldier’s name, can also be seen. Because part of the handwriting is difficult to decipher, please examine the close-up photographs carefully.

This is a genuine field-used example with considerable age and service wear. It has overall dirt, staining, discoloration, fraying, and small worn areas. The metal rings have surface rust.

The numerous exterior and interior straps remain present. However, some straps appear to have been shortened, and several ends are worn or frayed. The horizontal strap at the center of the front has a partial cut near its stitched attachment point. It does not currently appear close to separating, but this area should be handled carefully.

Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition. Due to its age and wear, this backpack is recommended primarily as a historical collectible or display piece rather than for practical use.

A scarce original Japanese Army field pack with strong wartime character, clearly preserved depot markings, and original soldier identification.
