The MusicNomad MN870 Precision Fret Evaluation Kit combines two of MusicNomad’s most powerful fretwork diagnosis tools — the MN822 and the MN840 — into a single all-encompassing package. First up, the 0.07-inch stainless-steel MN822 Precision Fret Rocker 0.07-inch boasts five ultra-flat sides with four straightedge lengths, enabling the Precision Fret Rocker to perfectly span 3-fret increments anywhere on the fingerboard. By laying the Precision Fret Rocker across any three frets, you can easily check to see if the middle of the three frets is high, as a proud middle fret will lift the center of the rocker up like a seesaw, rocking up and down onto the first and third frets of the span. Hunting down a low fret? The MN840 Precision Fret Gauge Tool supplies you with a trio of stainless-steel feeler gauges to evaluate low frets, check for proper fret seating, and even ensure your frets have enough height to survive a leveling job.
One half of the MN870 package, the MN822 Precision Fret Rocker features a unique 5-sided construction, with four different lengths to perfectly span three frets anywhere on the fingerboard. Each side is ground to an incredibly precise tolerance of +/-.0015”/ft for the utmost accuracy, while the rocker’s heavy-duty stainless-steel build clocks in at a robust 0.07 inches for a high-quality weighted feel. Finally, while the MN822 Precision Fret Rocker is built to last the long haul, Sweetwater’s luthiers recommend rigging it up via the convenient hang hole when not in use.

So, you’ve rocked your frets, everything checks out, yet you’re still getting fret buzz. Don’t worry — it’s a common problem, which usually means another setup-related issue. Luckily, the MN822 Precision Fret Rocker sports all the setup specs you could ever need, printed right onto the side of the rocker itself! From common action heights to fraction/decimal conversions to multiple action gauges, the MN822 Precision Fret Rocker packs the power of an entire instrument measurement arsenal into a single do-it-all tool.
While the Precision Fret Rocker is more than adept at determining if a fret is high, finding a low fret can be a bit trickier. Why? When the rocker is placed across three frets, a high middle fret will naturally cause it to rock; a low middle fret won’t cause any movement at all, as the higher first and third frets will simply hold the rocker level.
Luckily, the MN870 kit comes equipped with the MN840 Precision Fret Gauge tool — a trio of stainless-steel feeler gauges, custom-sized to accomplish all your fretwork-related needs. While the fret rocker is in position, this tool’s 0.0015-inch gauge is designed to be slotted between the top of the target fret and the bottom of the rocker. If the feeler gauge makes it through, that means there’s a gap and, therefore, a low fret that will require further attention. Moreover, the MN840 also boasts a 0.004-inch gauge to check for proper fret seating and a 0.024-inch gauge to ensure your frets have enough meat left for a fret leveling job.
