A Beautiful Mid Late 19th Century, Russian Orthodox of Saint Mitrophan (Mitrofan) of Voronezh (Святитель Митрофан Воронежский), the first Bishop of Voronezh (1623–1703), a wonderworker and one of the few saints formally canonized in the Synodal period (1832). He is shown half-length (or three-quarter length) as a schema-bishop/monk: elderly, with a white beard, wearing black monastic vestments (riasa and klobuk/cowl marked with a cross), a pectoral cross, and holding an open book (typically containing lines from his spiritual testament) in one hand while blessing with the other and grasping a pastoral staff (crozier). A small inset panel in the upper left shows a miniature image of the Mother of God with the Christ Child (most often a reference to the Smolensk Icon of the Theotokos, which was his personal cell icon and a gift from Patriarch Joachim).
The top inscription in Church Slavonic reads approximately “Святый Митрофанъ …” (Saint Mitrophan…), confirming the identification. This is the standard post-canonization iconographic type that became widespread in the 19th century.
This beautiful Icon is hand painted on wood and is has a fine craquelure (cracking network) the painted surfaces, consistent with age and traditional materials. It has some age related wear and rubs and some wear along the back bottom edge, but it's in overall very nice antique condition and there are no odors. It measures; 4-3/16" x 3-1/8" x 1/4".
