The book documents S. A. Andrée’s failed attempt to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon and the subsequent fate of the expedition.
It contains the diaries, notes and records of three Swedish explorers — S. A. Andrée, Nils Strindberg and Knut Fraenkel — written during their 1897 balloon expedition in the balloon Eagle. After the balloon was forced down onto the Arctic ice, the men attempted to travel south on foot and by sledges. All three died during the journey.
Their remains, diaries, photographs and equipment were discovered on White Island (Kvitøya) in 1930. This book presents those recovered documents alongside a reconstructed narrative of the expedition, official investigation findings, maps and photographs, explaining what happened after the landing and how the expedition ended.
It is both a primary historical record and an account of one of the most famous and tragic polar exploration attempts of the late 19th century.
