A vintage Soviet postcard issued in 1985, reproducing the famous 1944 wartime political caricature “At the Reception of the Mad Commander-in-Chief” (“На приеме у бесноватого главнокомандующего”) by the celebrated Soviet satirical art collective Kukryniksy.
Originally created for the Okno TASS (TASS Windows) propaganda series during World War II, the caricature depicts Adolf Hitler in a grotesque upside-down pose while receiving a German general from the Eastern Front. The general asks what should be done now, and Hitler replies that he should be allowed to “collect his thoughts.”
The image is a striking example of Soviet anti-Nazi wartime satire, mocking Hitler and the deteriorating German military situation on the Eastern Front in 1944.
