This is a real rarity - the short-lived "midget" size pencil from Wahl Eversharp. This model lasted only a few years from its launch in 1921 - and was gone from the 1925 catalogue. It is the shortest full-dimension pencil that Wahl Eversharp ever made (the "match thin" was much thinner), and is only 7.8cm (3 1/16") long.
This is a genuinely superb example of the midget - in truly excellent condition. An early version, dating before 1924 (it has the smaller lead cone), this is a bright, glossy pencil with the milleraies "Colonial" line design, which is strong and unrubbed. There is a vacant cartouche, should you wish to engrave it personally. Condition is excellent throughout - no damage or dents, and some age-related handling wear is visible under magnification. There is the tiniest pin-prick mark to the vacant cartouche, which you might be able to make out in the video. The steel lead cone has some slight age-related discolouration which was common for the pre-1924 models. All in all, in far better condition than I will be if I make over 100 years of age.
The pencil is working perfectly, the twist mechanism is smooth and firm, the top pulls off to reveal the original unused (hardened) eraser. This can be replaced by a new, 6mm section of eraser if you wish. The brass bushing holding the eraser unscrews to access the lead storage. This pencil was originally sold with 6 pieces of spare lead - and this pencil contained 6 pieces when found, plus one more in the pencil barrel.
The midget Colonial pencil appears in the 1921 catalogue (when it was launched), on Page Nine, described as a "new and popular number" design, and is 12K yellow gold filled. It is model code 10MW. In the same catalogue, the midget is launched in 18K green gold fill, solid gold and also sterling silver - all were gone by 1925. The catalogue Page Nine (see photo) shows how the size of this pencil compares with a "normal" pocket size pencil, and the full-size version. I have also photographed this midget next to those larger sized pencils (they do not form part of this sale).
I have included a copy of some non-original instructions - they are from the later 1920s, but are helpful for this pencil as the operation of the pencil did not change a great deal when "perfected" in 1924. The pencil will be in a protective velvet slip bag, loaded with those 6 leads in storage, and ready to deliver another 100 years of service.
