Sasaki is a weary middle-aged man racing headlong down the path of the "corporate drone." His only quiet sources of solace are the cigarettes he smokes religiously and the cheerful service he receives from Yamada-san, a clerk at his local supermarket. One night, exhausted from work, he heads to the store seeking comfort, only to find that Yamada-san isn't there—and to make matters worse, there’s nowhere left these days where he can actually smoke. Just as he’s feeling utterly dejected, a woman named Tayama—dressed in a rather eccentric style—calls out to him, saying, "You can smoke here."
