Clair Everett Stewart used the name Sorcha Boru for the whimsical ceramic pieces she designed that were made in San Carlos CA from ca 1940-50s.  Her pieces were usually made with a terra-cotta or buff colored clay and were small and included many figurines and salt and pepper sets.  A well-recognized artist and ceramicist, her works are on display in many art museums across the United States.

These cute little owl shakers are a great example of the detail of the designs in her art.  Both owls are standing on a round base finished with a light blue glaze that is about 1-1/4 inches in diameter.  Their bodies are finished in a glossy purple glaze with orange rings around their eyes and 3 holes in the top of their head.  In different poses, the slightly taller owl tilting its head has blue eyes and is about 2-1/2 inches tall.  The other owl has orange eyes and is about 2-1/4 inches tall and has the hand-incised "SBC" marking on the bottom with what looks like a hand-incised M or W (possibly the decorator's mark.)

As shown in the last photo, the upright owl has a small chip in the bottom rim on the back side of the shaker just above the "B" in the hand-incised mark.  Otherwise, they are in good vintage condition for shakers over 60 years old and ready to add to a collection or display all on their own.
