Rosemeade Pottery in Wahpeton ND made numerous hand-painted pottery shapes from 1940 to 1961.  Their many animal-shaped salt and peppers, figurines, and other shapes were very popular items in the area's souvenir shops.  Often depicting animals native to the area, they were very realistically shaped, detailed, and colored.  

When Rosemeade was in business, ashtrays would have been a big seller and while they did produce various "typical" ashtrays, they also made animal-shaped ashtrays.  This mallard duck hen ashtray is a great example of Rosemeade's attention to detail.  

An example of this ashtray can be seen on page 50 of the 2000 Collectors Encyclopedia of Rosemeade Pottery - Identification & Values - by Darlene Hurst Dommel.

She was finished in realistic glossy glazes on her "drabber than the male" feathers and orange glaze highlighting her bill and eyes.  She is about 3-1/2 inches tall, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 6-5/8 inches beak-to-tail.    

While there is a cigarette holder slot at her tail, the "ashtray appearance" is not bold and she could certainly be used for a trinket dish or a small planter.  

She is in very good vintage condition - no chips, hairlines, or crazing - and ready to use, add to a collection, or display all on her own.
