A Victorian edition of Octavius Winslow's The Precious Things of God, bound in contemporary full leather with raised bands, gilt page edges and particularly attractive multicoloured marbled endpapers.
Octavius Winslow (1808–1878) was a prominent 19th-century evangelical minister and devotional writer whose works remain particularly appreciated among readers of Reformed and evangelical literature. His writings are characterised by an experiential treatment of Christian doctrine, with particular emphasis upon Christ, grace, assurance, suffering and the spiritual life of the believer.
The Precious Things of God is one of Winslow's best-known devotional works. Taking its theme from the various things described as “precious” in Scripture, Winslow considers the preciousness of Christ, faith, trial, God's thoughts, the divine promises, Christ's blood, the anointing, God's children, God's Word, prayer, Christ's sympathy with human infirmity, and the death of the saints.
The contents include:
Bound in contemporary full brown leather, with blind-ruled borders to both boards and a spine divided into compartments by raised bands.
The volume has gilt page edges and very attractive period multicoloured marbled endpapers.
A handsome little Victorian devotional volume despite the age-related wear described below.
Please note that this copy is incomplete: the single leaf comprising pages 111–112 is absent. Page 110 is followed by the opening of Chapter IV on page 113. This has been taken into account in the price.
The leather binding shows general rubbing, scuffing and wear consistent with age and use, particularly around the board edges, corners, joints and spine extremities. There is some loss/wear at the head and foot of the spine.
There are several conspicuous dark stains/marks to the front board, together with a smaller mark to the rear board.
Internally there is foxing, spotting and age-toning, varying in intensity.
There is also occasional previous-owner underlining and annotation in coloured pencil/crayon, as shown in the photographs. This is occasional rather than present throughout the entire volume.
The attractive marbled endpapers show some age and handling marks.
Apart from the specifically noted missing leaf comprising pp. 111–112, the text runs through to the final numbered page, 425.
