The 1985 Leaf Baseball set consists of 264 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2”. This set is nearly identical to the Donruss issue of the same year, as Leaf Company had earlier acquired Donruss, and used their cards to introduce itself to the Canadian market. On each item, a full-color image is framed by a rich black border, with the athlete’s name and position identified at the bottom border and the team logo imprinted at the corner. Card backs include the athlete’s name, position, and card number statistics. The clearly obvious difference between the two sets is that this Leaf issue has its copy on the reverse printed in both English and French. The sets also bear different numbers. Ryne Sandberg (#1), Don Mattingly (#7), Cal Ripken, Jr. (#14), Tony Gwynn (#25), Ozzie Smith (#60), Tom Seaver (#101), Pete Rose (#144), Carlton Fisk (#155), George Brett (#176), Wade Boggs (#179), Mike Schmidt (#205), Rickey Henderson (#208), and Nolan Ryan (#216), Key rookie cards include Orel Hershiser (#38), Roger Clemens (#99), Kirby Puckett (#107), and Dwight Gooden (#234). The 1985 Leaf set also has two cards – Tim Raines (#252) and Dave Stieb (#251) – identified as “Canadian Greats” – that do not appear in the Donruss offering.
