Vintage early Cold Steel TANTO, made in Japan in the 1980s.

This is the original early version from the period when Cold Steel simply marketed the model as the “TANTO.” The “Master Tanto” name was introduced later as the Tanto series expanded into additional variations.

It features the distinctive early configuration with brass guard and pommel fittings, black textured handle, and the original-style leather sheath.

Specifications:
Blade Length: Approximately 6 inches
Overall Length: Approximately 11 1/4 inches
Made in Japan
Original leather sheath included

I am the original owner of this knife. I first saw the Cold Steel TANTO advertised in Soldier of Fortune magazine and wanted one badly. During a family trip to Los Angeles in the 1980s, when I was still in junior high school, my parents took me to a knife shop where I purchased this knife. At the time, I remember being surprised—and a little disappointed—to discover the “Made in Japan” marking, although today these early Japanese-made Cold Steel knives have become highly collectible.

This early version was not sold in Japan at that time.

The knife remains in excellent condition with its original factory edge and no signs of use. The blade is very clean. The brass fittings have developed some natural darkening and patina from age.

The original leather sheath is also included. It shows light age and storage wear, including a small indentation as shown in the photos.

The original box is no longer present; it became damaged over the years and was discarded long ago.

A very well-preserved example of an early Japanese-made Cold Steel TANTO from the company’s formative years.

Please examine all photos carefully for the exact condition.
