Vintage Japanese Studio Pottery Katakuchi Cobalt Blue Bowl Gold Detail 15cm VGC

Description

A striking vintage Japanese studio pottery vessel in deep cobalt blue with applied gold decoration.

The form is a squared, softly flared bowl with rounded corners and a folded vertical crease down one side, giving it a sculptural, modernist presence. The katakuchi pouring lip is a traditional Japanese form, used for serving water, tea or sake, and equally valued as a decorative object.

The glaze is a rich matte cobalt, smooth and evenly applied, with a paler interior and a pooled blue centre. Applied to one side is a patch of gold, roughly 4cm across, with a fine lacy, crazed texture where the gold has settled over the matte surface. It catches the light beautifully against the blue and marks the piece as decorative rather than utilitarian.

The base has an unglazed foot ring, consistent with studio firing. Thick, solid ceramic body with real weight in the hand.

A lovely example of late 20th-century Japanese ceramic design — suits display, serving, or a studio ceramics collection.
