Vintage Tasmanian Glassblowers James Dodson Art Glass Pair Solid Paperweight Box

Two pieces of handmade Australian studio art glass by Tasmanian Glassblowers, Breadalbane, Tasmania — sold together as one lot.

The larger piece is clear glass in a thick, chunky sculptural form, holding a scatter of naturally trapped air bubbles and fine internal streaking through the body. These are characteristic of hand-worked studio glass, not flaws. The smaller piece is a solid cylinder with rich plum-purple and white swirled banding running through it. Both are solid glass rather than blown hollow forms, with real weight in the hand.

Both pieces still carry their original gold circular foil labels reading TASMANIAN GLASSBLOWERS · AUSTRALIA, with the studio's glassblower-and-punty emblem.

Included is the original printed presentation box and the maker's information card. The card notes that the glass is made from silica sand mined near Savage River on Tasmania's west coast, worked by skilled glassblowers using traditional techniques, and gives the studio address at 859 Hobart Road, Breadalbane, Tasmania 7258.

The box carries the signature of James Dodson, the master glassblower who founded Tasmanian Glassblowers. Dodson trained at the Orrefors Glass School in Sweden and worked in London before establishing his studio just outside Launceston.

A lovely desk ornament or shelf piece, and a good addition to an Australian studio glass collection.
