Lauren Little Wolf (1945-2004) was an award winning basketmaker from the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) nation who also taught others this indigenous artform. She created this charming little polychrome basket of natural black ash with a rainbow effect. The natural wood has mellowed to warm patina; it is accented with orange, scarlet red & a dark blue purple using vegetal or commercial dyes.The black ash was harvested from trees that have been searched out to have just the right properties. The wood is pounded into splints that break along the growth rings, that are later cut to size using a knife or by running them through a hole cut into a can. The smaller splints in this basket are less than 3mm wide, so this is very fine work! This is signed Lauren Little Wolf on the base. It measures approx 4.5" H x 4" W x 4" D. From a Wisconsin estate. This would be a wonderful addition to any collection of native arts.
