Santa Clara Carved Blackware Bird

This charming bird sculpture was made by an unknown native American artisan, likely from the Santa Clara pueblo which is known for their carved blackware pottery. This was handbuilt from local clay, polished to a high sheen & given some basic carved linear detailing to the wings and tail. It was pit fired outside & given a second firing to smoke the clay body, which gives the surface the dark black coloration. It is unusual in that it is dimensional, unlike the small concave bird pin dishes that were popular during the mid 20th century. Surprisingly, the body of this bird appears to be solid clay, instead of hollow as we might expect. This is unsigned. It measures approx 1.5" H x 3.5" L x 2.75" W. This is sure to become a favorite in any collection of native American arts!

Excellent condition! No issues.
