Vintage Japanese Kimekomi Doll Pair Fabric Kimono Display Dolls on Base 20cm

Description

A charming pair of vintage Japanese kimekomi-style dolls, mounted together on a display base.

Kimekomi is a distinctive Japanese doll-making tradition: fine grooves are cut into the body of the doll, and the edges of each piece of fabric are tucked down into those channels rather than sewn. The result is clothing that appears to drape naturally with no visible stitching anywhere — the technique dates back to the eighteenth century and remains one of the most recognisable forms of Japanese doll craft.

This pair shows the technique nicely, with patterned textile kimono, decorative cord detailing, and the gentle smiling expressions typical of the form. Bright, well-preserved fabrics and a pleasing scale for a shelf, cabinet or display case.

Measurements: approx. 20 x 10 x 7 cm
