Cleveland came in as the road favorite, led by Otto Graham, Marion Motley, Dante Lavelli, Mac Speedie, Dub Jones, and Lou Groza under coach Paul Brown. The Rams countered with Bob Waterfield, Norm Van Brocklin, Elroy Hirsch, and Tom Fears, coached by Joe Stydahar.
With the game tied 17-17 in the fourth quarter, Van Brocklin connected with Fears on a 73-yard touchdown that put L.A. ahead for good.
