De la Fabrique St., Quebec City

A charming example of Quebec's star-shaped street patterns, so Parisian in character. In the 1600's, these are county lanes winding their way through forest to the small market, established in 1676. By 1842, the big, bustling market attracts crowds of carters, buyers and sellers, all bargaining brashly in French or English; squaws displaying gaudy trinkets; and Gentlemen of the British Garrison strutting about, agape at the plentiful choice of fresh-killed game, or the spectacle of pigs standing on their feet and fish standing on their heads, frozen solid.

The imposing church at the right is the massive Quebec Basilica, begun in 1647 and completed in 1925. Over 500 noteworthy French colonials are buried here, including the illustrious Frontenac.
