Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning novel reimagines the life and death of Shakespeare’s son with lyrical power and emotional depth.  This beautifully illustrated Folio, with artwork by Becca Thorne, pairs rich historical detail with striking design – a haunting, heartfelt portrait of love, grief and the bonds that outlive us

It is a rare thing to find a novel as emotionally potent and beautifully shattering as this one.  A reimagining of the death of William Shakespeare's son, it places Agnes Hathaway and Hamnet in centre stage, with the playwright in a supporting role.

A literary masterwork, this is a story of love, sacrifice and loss and the ways that death can reshape a family or a marriage.  If you have ever grieved, for a person or for a relationship, you will find resonance and tenderness here.  There is also a shimmering thread of mysticism that runs throughout, in the form of ghosts and a supernatural intuition.

Linocut printmaker Becca Thorne created the artwork for this edition.  A forest green slipcase is decorated with a gilded funeral wreath, and the book itself is bound in sage-coloured linen, with a screen-printed tableau featuring Hamnet at the centre.  Inside, there are five full-page illustrations, as well as intricate initial caps with botanical motifs.
