An attractive and increasingly scarce pair of late Georgian / Regency English bone china cups and matching saucers, attributed to the New Hall Porcelain Works, Shelton, Staffordshire, dating to approximately c.1815–1820.

The set is beautifully hand-painted with delicate scattered floral sprigs comprising cobalt blue forget-me-not style flowers, soft pink blossoms and pale green foliage, all framed by a cobalt blue feathered border and finished with hand-applied gilt rims. The restrained decoration and elegant moulded forms are characteristic of refined English porcelain produced during the Regency period.

Each of the four pieces bears the hand-painted pattern number ‘1122’ in puce to the underside. Although these wares are unmarked, the combination of the painted pattern number, porcelain body, form and decoration strongly supports an attribution to New Hall’s early bone china production. As with much unmarked English porcelain of this period, the attribution should be regarded as informed rather than definitive.

The cups are of generous breakfast cup proportions with elegant pedestal feet, finely moulded scroll handles and lobed rims, complemented by matching lobed saucers. They display the quality and craftsmanship associated with early nineteenth-century Staffordshire porcelain and would make a fine addition to any collection of New Hall, Regency or English porcelain.

Condition

Good antique condition overall.

* One saucer has a hairline crack extending from the footrim through to the rim.
* General age-related glaze crazing is present throughout.
* Expected rubbing and wear to the gilt decoration.
* Minor firing imperfections and footrim wear consistent with manufacture and age.

No obvious restoration has been identified under normal inspection.
