A highly detailed and interesting large format copper engraved sea chart of the approaches to London through the Thames Estuary and the adjacent coastline from Sandwich in Kent to Cley on the Sea (Clay) in Norfolk.
An inset continuation chart covers the final approaches to London through Tilbury, Gravesend, Dartford (Darford), Barking, East Ham, Woolwich (Wolwych), Southwark (South-worck) etc.
Also covers Reculver, Whitstable, Isles of Thanet and Sheppey, Colchester, Ipswich, Yarmouth, Cromer and many more towns on the coasts of Kent, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
The large scale affords great detail including soundings, anchorages, rocks and shoals.
A beautiful chart enhanced with attractive later hand colouring. It would make a striking piece for display.
The chart was published by the French Depot de la Marine and bears the original price of 30 sols.
Fine clean condition other than some light offsetting, free of repairs or restoration. Central fold as issued.
Approx. 35" x 18" (900mm x 450mm) map area only, with margins beyond.
Printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso.

The Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine, or Depot de la Marine was the French Hydrographic Office established in 1720 to publish accurate navigation charts for the French Navy. These fine charts are equivalent to the UK Admiralty or the US Coast Survey sea charts and are intended for navigational purposes with a wealth of fascinating detail.
