Rare Dutch Delft manganese-red/purple commemorative tobacco jar Circa 1815-1820, MARKED FOR DE DRYE KLOKKEN FACTORY. Depicting a lion on a pedestal inscribed DE LEEUW VAN WATERLOO

Approx 26cm high.

This jar was crafted shortly after the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815) to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. It depicts the iconic Lion of Waterloo resting its paw on a globe. This motif became world-famous when King William I of the Netherlands ordered the construction of the massive Lion's Mound monument on the actual battlefield site.

Painted in a distinctive manganese-red/purple monochrome palette rather than traditional Delft blue. Antique tobacco jars of this era originally came equipped with a heavy brass or copper lid to keep the contents fresh, this is not present.

Approximately 26cm high. There are chips & hairlines. Please see photos.
