This is an original WWII Japanese Type 98 Shin Gunto koshirae fitted with a postwar non-sharpened display blade.
The sword mountings, handle, fittings, and scabbard are original wartime pieces. The original blade was removed after the war and replaced with an alloy display blade featuring a reproduced hamon pattern.
The scabbard is the standard single-ring military-issue type, constructed from steel and finished in olive-green paint. More than approximately 95% of the original paint remains. There are only a few small areas of surface rust and age-related wear.
The handle is covered with genuine ray skin and wrapped with tan-colored tsuka-ito. The menuki feature a three-flower design. The standard military tsuba and fittings remain in place.
The sword shows genuine service use. The handle wrapping has darkening, surface wear, and some fraying. The sarute swivel is missing.
The spring-operated scabbard-locking mechanism is present, but the tip of the locking hook is broken, so the sword does not lock into the scabbard.
The mekugi has been driven deeply into the handle, and the sword has not been disassembled. The tang and internal construction have therefore not been inspected.
The replacement blade is made from a non-ferrous alloy. It has no sharpened edge and is intended only for display. A decorative hamon pattern has been reproduced along the blade.

The handle wrapping shows darkening, fraying, and wear from actual use. One small area of the wrapping near the upper handle is damaged, as shown in the photographs.
The sarute swivel is missing.
The scabbard-locking mechanism is present, but the locking-hook tip is broken and does not secure the sword.
The sword has not been disassembled.
