A vintage reproduction or privately manufactured decorative dagger modeled after a Japanese Navy dirk.

This piece was included in a collection of original WWII Japanese Navy dirks that we acquired. However, due to its dimensions, materials, construction, and comparatively coarse detailing, we do not believe it to be an original military-issued example.

The blade is made of steel rather than the zinc-alloy material commonly used for later Japanese reproductions. Steel-bladed imitation swords of this type were generally produced before Japan’s revised firearms and swords control law took effect in 1958, after which the manufacture of unregistered steel sword blades was prohibited. For this reason, this example is believed to date from the 1950s or earlier, although its exact date and manufacturer are unknown.

The dagger is larger than a standard Japanese naval dirk and features a broad, Japanese sword-style blade. The steel blade has a plated finish and no sharpened cutting edge.

The handle is made of wood with cast brass-colored fittings and decorative wire-style bands. The metal scabbard has a dark painted finish with cast cherry blossom decoration and two suspension rings.

The locking mechanism functions properly and securely retains the dagger in the scabbard.

Condition:

The blade has scattered light oxidation and discoloration beneath or on the plated surface.

The scabbard paint has scratches, wear, and areas of finish loss.

The decorative detailing is comparatively coarse, consistent with reproduction or civilian manufacture.
