The 1947 oil pipeline project you are referring to is the historic Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline). It remains one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century. The project links directly back to Ras el Misha'ab, which was established by Aramco in July 1947 as the main receiving port, supply depot, and base camp for the pipeline’s construction.
The Purpose of Tapline
  • Bypassing the Suez Canal: Before the pipeline, tankers had to make a costly 3,000-mile journey around the Arabian Peninsula. The Suez Canal charged a heavy toll of 18 cents per barrel ($40,000 per tanker at the time).
  • Fueling Post-War Europe: The project was designed to economically transport crude oil directly from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil fields to the Mediterranean Sea to speed up the reconstruction of Western Europe after World War II.
Ras el Misha'ab's Vital Role
Because the pipeline required over 300,000 tons of steel, Aramco needed a gateway to unload massive cargo ships. They chose Ras el Misha'ab because its natural coastal contours provided one of the few suitable deep-water anchorages in the area.
To move the massive 30- and 31-inch diameter pipes from the ships to the shore, engineers constructed an innovative, automated "Skyhook" cableway system. This system carried the pipe sections across the water directly to the Ras el Misha'ab pipe yard, where workers welded them into longer segments before trucking them into the desert.
Pipeline Specifications & Legacy
  • Length: Spanned roughly 1,648 to 1,664 kilometers (over 1,000 miles).
  • Route: Ran from the Abqaiq fields in Saudi Arabia, straight through Jordan and Syria, terminating at the port of Sidon in Lebanon.
  • Capacity: It initially moved 300,000 barrels of oil per day, eventually peaking at 500,000 barrels per day.
  • Status: Geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts caused multiple disruptions, leading to the pipeline being completely shut down by the 1980s and 1990s.
The Saudi Heritage Commission officially designated the Tapline as the Kingdom's first industrial heritage site. 
Jubail (Al Jubail) is a major industrial city located on the Persian Gulf coast in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It is situated approximately 160 kilometers southeast of Ras el Misha'ab. It is home to Jubail Industrial City, the largest industrial city of its kind in the world, which serves as a global powerhouse for petrochemical production.
