Rather than illustrating one familiar movie scene, Kevin Tong deconstructed the galaxy’s most indispensable astromech droid into an intricate exploded technical diagram. R2-D2’s dome, tools, sensors, mechanical components, and assorted Rebel-saving gadgets float around his central body like the schematics from one hell of an Imperial repair manual.
Tong spent months studying and pausing the original Star Wars trilogy to accurately represent the tools and components R2-D2 used throughout the films. His stated goal was to remind viewers of the many moments when this little blue-and-white trash can on wheels quietly saved everyone’s ass. Frankly, the entire Rebel Alliance would have been cooked without him.
The technical blue, purple, green, and metallic-silver artwork is printed using five colors with glow-in-the-dark inks. Under normal lighting, it resembles an elaborate engineering blueprint. In darkness, selected elements illuminate and reveal another layer of the design.
Released on Black Friday 2010, the complete edition of 400 hand-numbered prints sold out through Mondo in approximately five minutes. This is an original 2010 release, not a reproduction, commercial reprint, or later edition.
