Early 20th Century blue glazed Wembley Lion by Ashtead Potteries. Known as the 'Herrick' lion - designed by Frederick Charles Herrick 1887-1970 that became the emblem for the British Empire Exhibitions at Wembley.
Ashtead Potteries was set up in 1923 by Sir Lawrence Weaver to employ WW1 injured servicemen - it only made pieces for 12 years before it closed down. The potters were given a stand at 'The British Empire Exhibitions' in Wembley in 1924 and 1925 to show their skills. This figurine was perhaps made for these exhibitions.
