Up for sale is a rare, historically fascinating single Japanese Jiki Shippo (porcelain-enamel) cloisonné vase dating to the Meiji Period (circa 1880). This stunning piece showcases a short-lived technical breakthrough where traditional glass cloisonné wirework was masterfully applied over a high-fired porcelain/ceramic foundation rather than a metal base.

The main body and the two flanking loop handles—finely shaped as stylized elephant heads—were molded as a single ceramic unit. The handles feature a brilliant, dark metallic "bronze glaze" finish that seamlessly blends into the overall design. The vibrant, turquoise-blue background is meticulously decorated with intricate polychrome enameling. One side features a delicate butterfly in flight approaching summer blossoms, while the reverse depicts a wonderfully detailed praying mantis resting on a striped gourd—classic Asian symbols of abundance and good fortune.

The ceramic form is secured to its original, separate cast bronze footed base featuring stylized animalier feet. The underside retains its authentic late 19th-century assembly construction, including the heavy iron weighting plate secured by a central square nut to keep the porcelain stable.

This antique vase is in beautiful structural condition for its age. Consistent with true 19th-century Jiki Shippo porcelain-enameling, the turquoise ground exhibits a dense, stable network of fine age-crazing throughout, which is expected for this specific glaze formulation and adds wonderful antique character. The wirework remains flush and intact. Please note that one of the bronze-glazed ceramic elephant handles shows a slight, minor chip that exposes the underlying light ceramic body—consistent with age and handling. The separate cast bronze base ring retains its gorgeous, untouched dark original patina. There are no structural cracks or repairs to the main body.
