Overview

This listing is for a Sophos XG 230 1U rackmount firewall appliance, removed from a working environment. This unit comes equipped with a 2-port SFP FlexiPort expansion module installed in the expansion bay (visible on the left front panel, ports 1 and 2 with LNK/ACT and Speed indicators) — a value-add over the base configuration, providing additional fiber/SFP connectivity beyond the standard onboard ports. The appliance features 8GB DDR4 RAM, 6 onboard Gigabit copper ports, and the integrated LCD status display with navigation buttons.

This unit does not include an SSD/storage drive. Because Sophos's XG/XGS firmware and licensing are tied to the original storage media, this appliance will not boot into Sophos's proprietary OS out of the box. However, since the hardware underneath is a standard x86 platform, this makes it an excellent low-cost base for installing a free, open-source firewall/router operating system of your choice (e.g., pfSense, OPNsense, or a general-purpose Linux distribution) on a drive you supply. This is a popular and well-documented repurposing path for decommissioned Sophos-style appliances in the homelab and small business community.
