Concrete Island is a 1974 novel by J. G. Ballard in which wealthy architect Robert Maitland survives a car accident only to find himself trapped on a derelict “island” in the middle of intersecting motorways. Stranded yet surrounded by civilisation, he meets other inhabitants and struggles to survive while the story suggests his isolation is also psychological.
