Antique plate made by DE McNicol China. This plate was given to customers at Deshler Mercantile Co. in Deshler, Nebraska.
The Deshler Mercantile Co. has deep roots in the founding of Deshler, Nebraska. It was established by H.J. Struve, a key figure in the town's history who had moved to the area in 1888, purchasing the land that would become the present site of Deshler along the newly completed Rock Island Railroad. The mercantile served the early settlers and became instrumental in local industry when Struve used his business to help a local broom-maker, Joseph Steiner, sell his products. Struve eventually provided financial backing during the Panic of 1893 to help establish the famous Deshler Broom Factory, an enterprise his family ran until 1973. Struve's legacy in Deshler extended beyond his mercantile store, as he also served as town council chairman and vice president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank.
Fair condition. No chips or cracks. As was common with ‘giveaway’ plates like this, many customers used them, as they had limited resources. This shows light utensil scuffing on the front and heavy staining on both sides. The design and gold is overwhelmingly intact.
